Chrysostom’s personification of death and Hades, his evocative language (e.g., “tasted his flesh,” “abolished,” “purged,” “bound in chains”), and the masterful and poetic utilization of parallelism and imagery all contribute to the highly iconic nature of this classical homily. In essence, Chrysostom succeeded in creating and presenting to the listeners a powerful oral image of the Risen Christ. Completely absent is any sort of philological or deductive argumentation. This homily rather represents a glorious example of inductive preaching whereby the people are presented with the image of Truth which they may appropriate as their own — the homily becomes the means for a personal and intimate holy encounter with the Risen Lord; an encounter which calls for a doxological response.

As Chrysostom was esteemed as the “Golden Mouth” in the East, his contemporary in the Latin West, Peter Chrysologus, was distinguishing himself as the “Golden-Worded.” Considerably less rhetorical than Chrysostom, Chrysologus’ idiom tended toward a less formal and more direct style. His homiletical craft, however, was no less iconic and creative than Chrysostom’s. Chrysologus’ utilization of illustrations and descriptive language followed the example of Jesus’ parabolic preaching, and to this day are highly readable homilies. The following are a few select excerpts from the homilies of Peter Chrysologus, the Bishop of Ravenna:
